Orange Baboon Tarantula (OBT), unsexed sling
About 7.6+ cm (3+") DLS, red colour form.
This lightning fast Old World species is a must have for experienced keepers!
Stunning looks, impressive webbing skills, and a tendency to be aggressive puts this species high on wish lists-- but it's best avoided by (most) beginners.
Also lovingly called the "Orange Bitey Thing"-- this tarantula can be a handful..
(If tarantulas make you seriously uncomfortable, these are likely to terrify you.)
They don't call them teleporting tarantulas for nothing!
Blink and this tarantula can suddenly be in a completely different place, and the speed at which they can lunge at prey, tongs, or your shadow at the side of their enclosure, has made us jump more than once.
As a fossorial species, they'll greatly appreciate deeper substrate that allows them to burrow, (we use a mix of top soil and coco-fiber) but we've found they will use hides and spend a lot of their time on top of, or at the entrance to, their burrows, making them a great display species.
Though, like other Old World tarantulas, they don't posses any urticating hairs, they are way faster, more defensive, and are said to have more potent venom.. it's still not strong enough to kill your average person, but the pain from a bite is said to be extremely unpleasant.
