Titan Isopods
This is the largest species of isopod we're currently breeding, and is one of the largest terrestrial isopods kept in captivity-- with adult males getting over 2.5 cm (1") long!
Porcellio hoffmannseggi will sometimes scatter when startled, but they're not very fast, & are easily handled .
Hailing from Spain, this surface-dwelling species requires higher ventilation, a very dry area, (with something to cling to) and a damp area for them to retreat to when needed.
This species also seems to prefer a lot more decaying wood, protein, & calcium than some of our other species.
Titan Isopods can be slower to establish and, (if starting with sub-adults) it may take a while to find any babies. Once established though, they can breed fairly heavily, & have decent sized broods, with babies that grow quite quickly in the right environment.
Aggressive/Territorial Behavior:
Though harmless to people, we've personally found this species can be more aggressive than your average isopod-- even towards members of their own colony.
This aggression can become fatal for the isopod(s) being picked on.
An enclosure that's too small for the isopods/colony to grow, (like the shoebox-sized bins we usually start our isopods in,) does seem to greatly increase anti-social behavior, aggression & fatalities.. while a properly-sized enclosure increases social behaviors, clustering & plenty of healthy babies!
We started our Titan Isopods in a 10" x 14" enclosure and had zero issues, but their colony has grown enough now that we've moved them into a 14"x20" enclosure.
